Divas With Heart

The Divas With Heart concert should have been billed Diva's With Lots Of Heart for the many special moments that they gave to the many diverse fans that jam packed Radio City Music Hall. It was a benefit for the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory sponsored by New York's 98.7 Kiss FM and hosted by Former NY Yankee Bernie Williams who also played at the event.

Divas With Heart

Gladys Knight opened the show in stunning fashion with a silver glitter gown to one of her classic songs 'Lets Dance'. Her live performance was full of energy. "Neither One of Us Wants To say Goodbye" which happened to be her surprise song of the night. She also admitted that in her 59 years in the business that this was her first time she ever played at Radio City Music Hall and closed out to a standing ovation.

Chaka Khan stormed the stage next singing her classic hit "I'm Here For You". She even acknowledge Ashford & Simpson in the audience who wrote her biggest hit "I'm Every Woman".

Divas With Heart   Now watching Patti LaBelle live is like watching the Hip Hop version of Busta Rhymes. You get way more than you pay for and you're never left disappointed. Ms. LaBelle strutted out in a mink singing say my name and waving her hands to the standing crowd. She stated " I'm 63 years young, has diabetes". She cut the orchestra off by saying "Don't Rush Me" while she was talking to her fans. Her in-between commentary was very funny when she dished out lines like " I'm the old 'G', old gangster, the original gangster". Then as the melodic tunes of her classic song "Somebody Love You" played, she pulled out a mirror and committed pure vanity as she stared at herself.

Divas With Heart   She then dedicated her 1978 single "You Are My Friend" to Luther Vandross, Yolanda King, co-Writer Billy Preston, Gerald and Shawn Levert, Anna Nicole Smith, three sisters, mom and dad who all passed away while people in the audience waved trinkets that created a sea of blue lights. She then broke down crying and announced her blood sugar was low as a young man brought over orange juice for her at her request. The greatest highlight of the night came when she called up Shawn Bell's parents and gave them a big hug on stage to a standing ovation and dedicated the song "Two Steps Away" to Shawn and the soldiers at war. Before she closed the show in dramatic fashion with "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", she brought out the original LaBelle's and sung "Lady Marmalade" as a fan danced on stage with the group.

Divas With Heart   With three of the biggest divas in the world going before her, the grandest diva of them all made an entrance that only she could. As "I'm Coming Out" blasted from the speakers and she made her way down through the audience from the back surrounded by guards and blowing kisses in a red sequence dress with red feathered Shaw.  A classic beauty that had the crowd singing along to all her classic tunes as she sung snippets.

Divas With Heart   People practically stood up all night participating in her performance. Just like the diva she is she had three costume changes which caused a little confusion and some people to leave a little earlier thinking the show was over. But the night ended in grand fashion with all the performers live on stage singing once last song together. The only flaw of the show was really that the two gigantic screens did not play the performance.
