"American Gangster"

The release of BETs: American Gangster comes to DVD this month and features in inside look into the life of Stanley Tookie Williams via his son Travon Williams. It what is deemed as historical black history, Travon has determined himself to open the world's eyes to what his late father had become despite his criminal beginnings. In this fantastic interview, Travon talks about the black youth in the world today, his father and his mission to uplift African American youth across the country.

This 'gangster' lifestyle incorporated by today's youth has really formed a negative outlook on the black community and what derives from it. "Just a reflection of society," says Travon. "Who came up with this idea of gang banging?".

Warm hearted and great spirited Travon had more to say about the BET: American Gangster DVD and how it portrayed his father, "It's always two sides to the story. This shows the deplorable past, however, that is why I told the other part. We as members of society can look at that and say why he did what he did. We are trying to show some form of awareness. Rehabilitation programs tell you to confess. I definitely think its a form of acknowledgment."

"The DVD," says Mr. Williams, "Is to put some awareness out there. Just by the title alone, we have to understand why they called it American Gangster. And them when I put my 20% on it... it showed a little more. The best solution to the problem is to understand the problem."

Travon isn't stopping there. He's developed a way of giving back and contributing to a community that spans the country. "I'm starting a youth organization called 'One Way Outreach'," states Travon.

Its no wonder Travon is taking such steps in the organization direction. His fathers portrayal in movies and documentaries certainly warrant him to tell the truth of what really happened; how his dad redeemed himself and was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. "We know what sells. Its the same thing with rap music. That is what society wants to see. I do give BET the credit to allow me to come on and give the balance. We can’t just blame it on the media we can blame it on the viewers. That’s all that sells. We have to focus on the title. It’s really saying look at what America is bringing."

"The next step," Williams concludes. "As my father talked about is Self-Redemption. Release yourself of the debt. In the Bible as part of the new covenant, it is your job to teach your neighbor the new covenant. It factors into every body's life. How does that sun get in the sky? Its part of your own self-development that you start to see these things. It played a big part of my fathers life. I want to see change. All that are like minded will make that happen. And right now what I do is try to continue my fathers work. He was sincere and he didn’t do it. He loved his people. Everything he did was straight from the heart. His sincerity and his fortitude."
