Tyler Perry is on a role this month. As
he first released his 7 successful plays
on DVD and now the first volume of
television show House of Payne; Episodes
1-20 hits DVD as well.
A story line based on bits and pieces
from each of his plays, House of Payne
explores the lives of three generations
living under one roof. Finally coming to
DVD, Perry's deja vu attempt at
producing the show wasn't so easily
masked at the failed first attempt at
launching the pilot series. The writers
do a poor job at grabbing the audiences
attention. Largely at times not even
funny, House of Payne isn't living up to
the Perry success in film and live stage
performances. The excessive comedy seems
to be more buffoon-like than funny.
Perhaps Perry's humor is best limited.
With the necessity of black shows needed
to not only employ African American
actors but to offer opportunity House of
Payne is a scary substitution of quality
material. Although touching real topics
that all households of any cultural or
ethnic background can identify it still
focuses more on the comedy effects
resulting in less 'acting' and more
intolerable performances.
