DVD INTERVIEW

MASTER P

MASTER P

Uncle P

By Tonisha Johnson

Master P has been in the entertainment industry for some time. From No Limit to The New No Limit; it’s been an up and down ride for the Louisiana rapper. The effects of life have interfered severely with striving to maintain the original mogul status of No Limit Records; before the reckless behavior of its heavy hitter members. Even harder, Hurricane Katrina, which totaled the rappers illustrious home leaving them to begin again; Master P still managed to focus on climbing the charts once again but with a new investment in son Lil Romeo.

Focusing on the success of immediate family; a sure fire, Master P rebuilds. He talks about his new found production company Hollyhood Cinema, record label without profanity and his father and son rap album to come.

Was doing this film with your son something that we’ll continue to see in the future?

Master P: Doing these types of movies and making these types of movies are for families. I think this is a great way that a whole family can watch. Nobody is perfect but my child has opportunities because of me. I don’t think that every kid will change… this is a great message that we’re sending out.

When you look back on it what was it like working with your son on this project?

Master P: We’re in entertainment together, it’s the greatest thing. By me giving my child knowledge… he can take from…. I think that he has to understand that knowledge. If you get the knowledge you can do anything. Most people just want to be successful. But if you have knowledge you can do anything. Uncle P came from the hip hop world but never took care of kids and now that he had that relationship he can take that to his kid. When I first had Romeo I had to slow down and do this… it changes you a lot. That’s what changed my music. I think this movie will change a lot of fathers out there. The most important message in the movie was this wasn’t about money; you have to come and be a regular person.

Do you think that this movie will change perceptions about you?

Master P: I think it’s a great thing, unlike my music, making movies is a challenge. You have to get into characters. I have another movie coming out where I play a black Superman which is a comedy. That is why I did Dancing with a star… Will Smith broke down those barriers. I want them to see me in different characters so they can say this guy can really act.

When your DVD repo came out everybody kind of followed suit. What will you hope people will take away?

Master P: I always try to give a message in what I’m doing. Repo was comedy funny. It was an adult orientated movie. This really showcases where I’m at right now in life. And what I want to do and be at. I think I’ve found my purpose. I just want to diversify. I don’t have to get beat one way… with this character, I think people will say they took care of kids, and that is what my life is about. I also have a book coming out ‘Guaranteed Success’. We want people to see who entertainers are.

So you have this new record label which is profanity free?

Master P: I want to show that you can be successful without the cuss words. You really have to get in your mind that you’re not selling out. You have to clean it up anyway because they won’t play it with the cuss words in it. If you do that anyway you have 12 to 14 songs that will play. If you can get a record into Wal-Mart and Target, you’re successful because these people are selling when the economy is not. My son can take the game to the next level, even though I sold 75 Million records I couldn’t get endorsements. So with that you can get endorsements.

What’s to come from your production company Hollyhood Cinema?

Master P: Repo with Katt Williams and Michael Black. I Got the Hook Up part two. The hot boys part two. I have so many great movies. This is all comedy. My thing right now with Hollyhood Cinema I want to focus on making people laugh. Romeo has a movie coming out called ‘Prom’. I think it’s a great outlet for a lot actor’s who don’t get a proper shot at Hollywood.

What’s next for you?

Master P: First father and son of hip hop album. We don’t have some of that ‘Dear Momma’ street music anymore but it makes you think. We will have mass appeal but it will be something that we can relate to. We haven’t had songs like that in awhile.

You had a great career. What do you think of when you look back?

Master P: That’s what life is about. You work so hard and sacrifice; I can’t wait till I get to this level and do something’s. Now I really can enjoy some of the things that I want to do. Every time you turn on the news, that’s what made me start this Take a Stand records, watching Oprah and Al Sharpton. Listening to the guys say these things but now want to make a change, I want to give back to the kids and show them something else. If you glorify the negative that is all kids want to do. My son is in the industry but going to college. Will Smith, Queen Latifah… let’s glorify some of these positive people. It will help change the way these kids think.
