FILM REVIEW

Norbit
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Katt Williams, Eddie Griffin and Marlon Wayans.

Everyone loves the many characters Eddie Murphy brings to life… including Eddie. Audiences love to see him dress up as the entire family of ‘The Klumps’ (not including the youngest son) but in this film Eddie goes overboard in more ways than one with Norbit.

One has to wonder if the writing duo Eddie and Charlie Murphy drained the budget with their nominal fees because Norbit falls flat of what was to be expected. Norbit starring Eddie Murphy begins with a family, barely stopping for a decent tuck and roll, who throws a small baby outside a Chinese orphanage. The bad start begins when the Chinese proprietor also played by Eddie Murphy picks up the baby saying ‘you ugly black baby. Nobody wants an ugly black baby. You be here forever’. Norbit is all down hill from there.

Normally, a complete description is necessary to support the film but not in this case as a complete description would only make you stop reading this review.

The best thing about Norbit was the previews and teasers available for advertising. Its anticipated box office smash for the first week will fall short the following week no doubt due to word of mouth reviews that most likely won’t compliment the film.

It wasn’t the buffoon like antics of the cast of characters like Eddie Griffin and Katt Williams who play pimps or the unfunny like appearance of Marlon Wayans as the freaky neighborhood exercise instructor that put this movie to shame. It’s the lack of humor and sad jokes that accomplished that for Eddie Murphy who isn’t known for poor comedy choice roles.

Does Eddie Murphy have an obsession for large black women? Or does Eddie Murphy think being overweight is funny? Apparently so as in most of the films that Eddie himself backs are predominantly focused on large women of African American decent which in turn can be deemed offensive instead of humorous.

Hopefully this weekend Eddie Murphy will take home an Oscar for his Academy Award nominated role in Dreamgirls. That way it will draw the bad light away from this fiasco of a film.
