PHAT GIRLZ

MO'NIQUE

Starring: Mo'Nique, Jimmy Jean Louis, Godfrey, Kendra C. Johnson and Joyful Drake

Mo’Nique wears her lifestyle on her sleeve. And knowing her, she’s probably licking the sweetness. In Hollywood, there is no room for insecurities. With that bit of knowledge you’d better come prepared to make them love you; no matter what.

It’s no secret that Mo’Nique' success is attributed to her glorifying her full figure. Her career is based on big. As such in the movie Phat Girlz where Mo’Nique stars as Jazmin Biltmore, a Phat (Pretty Hot and Thick) department store worker looking for her BIG break in designing tasteful clothes for large woman, Jazmin discovers that she doesn’t have to look like the crowd to 'fit' in.

As I talked with Mo’Nique; her persona is fun and exciting. She’s truthful and real. She’s doing it all and then some. From married w/children to movies, Ms. Mo’Nique is someone that she’ll never let you forget.

What is the big hoopla between big woman and thin woman in Hollywood?
Mo’Nique:
Cause that’s not the image that they put out there. So when we come into the picture, we’re not the image of their version of beauty.

What made you decide to take on Hollywood and not wait till you lost pounds to do it?
Mo’Nique:
I actually didn’t decide that. That’s how it played out. I’m just not willing to buy what they’re selling.

How do you handle all that you do and being a new mom?
Mo’Nique:
Baby. I have a wonderful team and I keep God first. That’s the only way I can tell you. It’s fun. It’s exciting. It’s two of them.

Yeah. You had twins.
Mo’Nique:
Girl, that’s a lot.

What are their names?
Mo’Nique:
David and Jonathan.

How old are they?
Mo’Nique:
6 months.

Oh. So, they’re starting to touch and crawl?
Mo’Nique:
Jonathan can hold his own bottle. He’s the bigger one.

How did you start the project for Phat Girlz?
Mo’Nique:
I got the script. I read it while taking a bath. I started reading the script and I just fell in love with it. And I called the director and said I would be honored to play Jazmine Biltmore.

Did you get to go to Nigeria or was that reenacted?
Mo’Nique:
I did get to go to Africa, but that was reenacted. We didn’t go to Africa to shoot that. We reenacted that.

Did you have any of your ideas implemented into the scripts?

Mo’Nique: No. What she wrote she captured. Like there was nothing that needed to be changed.

What special things did the cast do to get acquainted with each other?
Mo’Nique:
When I met Kendra (Kendra C. Johnson), the girl who plays my best friend (Stacey); it was as we were filming. But the chemistry was so incredible we knew that we were doing something really special. So it was love at first action.

What’s new in the book department?
Mo’Nique:
I have a cookbook coming out; ‘Skinny cooks can’t be trusted’.

Lol. What’s going to be special about your book? What are you going to do differently?
Mo’Nique:
We have some real food. We have real butter. Real sugar. Real milk. Real fatback in your collard greens.

You are wonderful. You have no idea.
Mo’Nique:
Thank you sistah.

If you could inspire women, what would you say?
Mo’Nique:
Look in the mirror and love the person looking back. And when you start doing that you won’t give a damn about people’ opinions. Especially if it’s not a nice one.

One more thing…where can people find your clothing line?
Mo’Nique:
Nowhere. I’m in a lawsuit. Some people took my likeness and used it in a clothing line. So, I have to fight that to get out of that and then I will start Mo’Nique’s For Real line.

Oh my. Who was the likeness that was using it? Do you want to name them?
Mo’Nique:
We can’t think of the name right now but it’s in Burlington Coat Factory. If you walk in there, you’ll see it.

Well, when the new line comes out…will there be anything special that you’ll be adding?
Mo’Nique:
Everything. It’s going to be affordable and quality.

Ok. Well thanks so much Mo’Nique.
Mo’Nique:
You’re welcome Tonisha!
