2007 New
York Comic Con came with an even bigger
crowd than last years premiere. The
Jacob Javits Center was well prepared
for the mass awaiting entrance.
Star Wars
characters and large MySpace banners
plagued the event. And if you were able
to catch some of the premiere gatherings
with film veterans like Wes Craven who
gave sneak peaks of ‘The Hills Have Eyes
2’ then you were in for a treat… or in
The Hills case… a trick.
Wes
Craven is back again with the sequel and
it’s even scarier than before. At the
Comic Con convention Wes along with son
and co-writer Jonathan Craven, HHE2 cast
members Daniella Alonso and Jessica
Stroup talk about the upcoming remake.
There are
a lot of horror movies whether good or
bad releasing without critics looking at
it?
Wes
Craven:
Well, with this one the picture is not
in trouble we think it’s pretty good.
Especially now with internet interviews
there is no predictability with reviews.
What
about the theme with the military. Where
did you draw that up?
Wes
Craven:
It came out of an idea that we had maybe
one of the remaining family members
joined the national guard and thought it
would be a local thing that she would
just do on the weekends and one day she
goes out for a jog with her brothers who
notice that she has gotten a lot
stronger and then one day she gets a
call from one of the company commanders…
so she has to go back to where she was
traumatized. So it’s not a bad idea. So
it’s like you go in expecting something
and you find something completely
different that you have to deal with.
It’s a little bit of a risk because it’s
not a family. In the Hills tradition
there is a family.
So with
that sense of ‘relative’ is that the
reason why you decided to go this route
with the sequel?
Wes
Craven:
Yeah. It seemed like a fun idea.
Is there
anything that scares you?
Wes
Craven:
Yes. The Bush administration.
Reconstructing the constitution… that is
very scary. That is as much as I will
say about that.
Why did
you decide to change the director on the
film?
Wes
Craven:
Well, that’s the name of the game with
these remakes. You have to find a
filmmaker that you trust and give it to
him or her and see what happens. We felt
that there was an artist there that
would not back down from a very touchy
subject or a very shocking subject. He
had a huge amount of experience in both
music videos and commercials.
Do you
think horror can be revitalized and do
you think your movie is going to play
into it all or do you think that
something different is going to come
along?
Wes
Craven:
I’ll sit down and start writing scripts.
That will be my contribution; something
totally original. This film is so
intense… Jonathan and I spent a lot of
time in a locked room for a long time. I
can see that horror is getting very
broadly spread and there is a large
amount of horror on television… it can
be dangerous but only in a good sense.
There’s a lot of remakes but I don’t
have anything against remakes.
What do
you have coming up next?
Wes
Craven:
I’m going to be writing something. I
have to lock myself in another room
(smile).
Will
there be a Hills Have Eyes 3?
Wes
Craven:
Could be. I think that a lot depends on
this one.
