Underground; the ‘other' Music Industry
is slowing becoming the major choice. As
technology grows it continues to offer
new and inventive ways for upcoming
artists to get music heard to a vast
audience in a quicker amount of time and
with less interference from major labels
that may take a big bite out of your
revenue; its strongly becoming the
lucrative option, which is reflective by
independent labels popping up all over
the place, creating new business and
following the steps of many like Jay Z
and 50 Cent right from the very
beginning.
Within this ‘other' music industry,
there are so many avenues to take. As
with Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn rap artist
Papoose who is making serious noise with
his mix tapes that landed him lyrical
appearances on widely played rap singles
but most recognizable is Violator
Management mate Busta Rhymes' “Touch It”
featuring Missy Elliot , DMX , Mary J.
Blige , Flip Mode Squads' Rah Digga and
G Units own Lloyd Banks .
As with new
artists Papoose is relentless; taking
every opportunity, sparing nothing. To
get a few questions in while in the
studio was a bit much to ask but he
kindly granted this interview.
You're a major
artist with no major deal. Is it more
lucrative for you to remain an
independent artist?
PAPOOSE: Basically, I
wouldn't say it was more lucrative. My
situation is one of a kind. I don't
think it's ever been done before. The
things I've did. The amount of people
that I've reached without a record
deal... It's gotten to the point where I
don't really need one but I got a whole
lot of them on the table. We just pick
the best one possible basically.
So you are
looking for a record deal and really
don't want to remain independent?
PAPOOSE: Well…there are
numerous record deals on the table for
large amounts of money. We're just
picking and choosing the best one right
now.
Rap is a
generation. Each brings the next a step
further. After some time artists become
more into business; will you be coming
into the game with more of a business
mindset?
PAPOOSE: Definitely. I will.
Definitely.
What would you
suggest to upcoming artists is the best
way to put out music independently?
PAPOOSE: To continue. I mean,
if your successful with it, you should
continue because you'll definitely see
more money if your records sells. That
is the overall picture. As far as record
sales as oppose to a major label, you'll
definitely see more money independently.
It's hard to
survive with the next big thing right
around the corner. How does Papoose
survive longevity?
PAPOOSE: Consistency.
What are you
looking to achieve in the music
industry?
PAPOOSE: I want to make
history. That's my biggest goal. 10
years from now…half these rappers, when
we say their name, people will say who?
I don't want to be a who…I want to be a
Papoose. 10 years from now. 15 years
from now. I want people to know who I
was. That's my biggest aim, know what
I'm saying? I want to make my biggest
mark.
What is your
coldest line lyrically?
PAPOOSE: I wouldn't say there
was one line. There are so many that I
wouldn't want to disregard one so I'm
not even gonna give you a response on
that one. I'm just gonna say I like them
all.
